Back-to-back July 4–5 storms dropped 1,400+ reports across Virginia. If hail or debris hit your glass — or a chip from the storm is suddenly cracking out in this July heat — we come to you. We file the insurance claim. Most policies pay $0 deductible on storm damage.
Get Your Quote →When a storm cell rolls through central Virginia, windshields take the brunt. Three damage types show up in the days after a major storm — and the mechanism matters when you file your insurance claim.
Hail is the obvious one. Stones the size of a quarter can crack a windshield on impact, and a single hailstone is enough to spider a laminated windshield into a full replacement. The damage is visible immediately and the connection to the storm is unmistakable.
Kicked-up debris is the under-the-radar cause. Storm runoff, hydroplaning traffic, and saturated shoulders throw gravel, branches, and roadside debris at cars doing highway speed on I-95, Route 1, and Route 460. These impacts often produce small chips that look harmless — but they're the ones that turn into full cracks within days of July heat (see next section).
Flood debris also matters. The Flood Watch that ran July 7–8 pushed water, branches, and storm debris into roadways across the Tri-Cities and metro Richmond. Anything that hits a windshield while the road is wet is a storm-damage claim under comprehensive coverage — not an at-fault collision claim. The distinction matters for your deductible and your rates.
If you're not sure whether the chip or crack on your windshield came from the storm, take a photo with a timestamp and call us. We'll tell you what kind of damage it is and what your coverage likely looks like.
Windshields are laminated glass — two layers of glass bonded to a plastic interlayer. They're strong, but they have a weakness: thermal cycling on a chip turns it into a crack, fast.
Here's what happens after a storm hits your windshield:
Day 1–2: A small chip — sometimes smaller than a pencil eraser — barely visible from the driver's seat. Looks harmless. You might not even notice it.
Day 3–5: July Virginia heat pushes parked-car interior temperatures past 150°F. That heat soaks into the chip, expands the glass around it, and then contracts at night when temperatures drop 30–40 degrees. Each cycle stresses the chip's edges.
Day 5–8: The chip has propagated into a crack — often overnight, often with no warning. A chip that was repairable last week is now a full windshield replacement. The damage pattern is so consistent that July is the single highest-crack month of the year, and the July 4–5 storms set the clock ticking on every chip they left behind.
This is the time-sensitive piece. If a storm chip is still small and outside the driver's line of sight, repair is fast and cheap — most policies cover it with $0 deductible. Once the chip turns into a crack longer than 14 inches, repair is no longer an option and you're looking at full replacement. The longer you wait in July, the more likely the chip spreads.
Our recommendation: if you drove through the July 4–5 storms and have any chip you haven't looked at, schedule a repair now. We come to your driveway. It's usually a 30-minute job, and if the chip is still small enough to repair, you'll drive away with the windshield you already have.
Storm damage is covered under the comprehensive portion of your auto insurance policy — not collision. That distinction matters in two ways:
1. The deductible is usually $0. Most comprehensive policies include glass coverage with no deductible for storm damage, or with a low glass-only deductible that's separate from your collision deductible. We see $0 deductibles on the majority of storm claims we file — Geico, State Farm, Progressive, USAA, and most other major carriers all offer this in Virginia.
2. A storm claim doesn't count against your driving record. Comprehensive claims don't affect your insurance score the way at-fault collision claims do. If your windshield was hit by a storm, you're entitled to use your coverage without worrying about a surcharge at renewal.
Virginia anti-steering law reminder: Under VA Code § 38.2-510, your insurance company cannot force you to use a specific shop. If your carrier tries to steer you to Safelite, Glass Doctor, or their own in-house program, you have the right to choose Legendary. We'll work with any carrier and meet any certification requirement they have.
We handle the claim from start to finish. You call us, we pull your policy info, we file the claim, we schedule the work, and we bill the carrier directly. You pay your deductible if one applies — and if your policy covers storm glass at $0, you pay nothing out of pocket for the glass itself.
If your windshield was hit during the recent storms — or if you're reading this because a chip from the storm is suddenly cracking out — here's what to do in the next hour.
1. Don't blast cold AC on hot glass. The thermal shock can take a small chip and turn it into a long crack in seconds. If your car has been sitting in the heat, ease the AC up gradually — or open the doors for a minute to let the interior temp equalize before you crank the cooling.
2. Photograph the damage with a timestamp. Your phone's camera app geotags and time-stamps automatically. Take one wide shot showing where the damage is on the windshield, and one close-up showing the chip or crack pattern. This documentation matters for your insurance claim, especially if the carrier asks when the damage happened.
3. Don't drive with a crack across your line of sight. Virginia law prohibits driving with a crack that obstructs the driver's view. If the crack is spreading across the driver's side or center, the car is not street-legal until it's repaired or replaced.
4. Cover the chip with clear packing tape if you can't get to us today. A small piece of clear packing tape over the chip keeps water and dirt out of the break. A clean chip is much easier to repair than one contaminated with road grime — and if the damage goes to replacement anyway, a clean break helps us get an accurate fit.
5. Call us. (804) 518-5532. We answer the phone, we tell you whether repair or replacement is the right call, and we schedule same-day mobile service if we have the slot. Most storm jobs are on the schedule within 24 hours.
When you call Legendary for storm damage windshield work, here's the sequence. No surprises, no waiting on hold, no chasing a dispatcher.
Same-day mobile service. We come to your home, your office, or your job site. Our mobile units carry OEM and premium aftermarket glass for the most common vehicles on Virginia roads, plus OEM urethane, primers, and ADAS calibration targets. If we have the glass on the truck, we can usually install the same day you call.
Lifetime warranty. Every job we do — glass, labor, and seal — is covered for as long as you own the vehicle. No fine print, no expiration date. If the windshield we install ever fails because of workmanship or adhesive failure, we replace it free.
AGSC certified. The Auto Glass Safety Council certification is the industry's safety standard. It means the technician installing your windshield has passed a written exam, a practical exam, and an audit of their installation procedures. Every Legendary installer holds current AGSC certification.
ADAS calibration included. If your vehicle has a forward-facing camera mounted to the windshield — lane-keep assist, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise — the camera needs to be recalibrated after a new windshield goes on. We perform static and dynamic calibration in-house at every appointment, so you don't get bounced from the installer to the dealer and back again.
Insurance filed for you. You call us, we handle the claim. Geico, State Farm, Progressive, USAA, Allstate, Nationwide, Erie, Travelers — we work with all the major Virginia carriers and most regional ones. We'll verify your coverage, file the claim, and bill the carrier directly so you only pay your deductible if one applies.
Virginia's HB312/SB767 law requires every glass shop to disclose ADAS calibration needs in writing before windshield replacement. Here's what drivers should know.
Call now or fill out the quote form — we answer the phone, we file the insurance claim, and we install the glass in your driveway. Most storm claims are $0 out of pocket.
