An EV windshield is not the same job as a gas-sedan windshield — panoramic single-piece glass, acoustic laminate, large camera clusters factory-bonded to the bracket, OEM-only sourcing on Polestar and tighter supply chains everywhere else. Recalibration is mandatory after every EV install — not optional. For Tesla, Lucid, and Rivian the recalibration half runs at the OEM Service Center on OEM-specific tooling (windshield install at our Colonial Heights shop, calibration at the OEM Service Center, same-day handoff). For Polestar, Hyundai, and Kia EV we recalibrate in-house with OEM-compatible static and dynamic tooling.

An EV windshield is a panoramic single-piece laminate with the ADAS camera-cluster bracket bonded at the factory. The bracket transfers with the glass on Tesla Model 3 / Y / S / X and Cybertruck — there is no fold-down module, no service hatch. Lucid Air, Rivian R1T / R1S, and Polestar 2 share the same panoramic-single-piece geometry. Every EV we service adds acoustic laminate to suppress road noise inside the cabin (which is otherwise amplified because there is no engine drone to mask it), and most add an IR-reflective coating. Tesla Model S / X add curved acoustic glass. Cybertruck uses armored panoramic glass. Polestar 2 and Hyundai Ioniq 5 use panoramic single-piece roofs that bond to the body structure at the factory. When we remove an EV windshield, the camera-cluster datum breaks — physically, geometrically, completely. The OEM published procedure for every brand in this list requires recalibration before the vehicle is driven. For Tesla, Rivian, and Lucid, OEM-specific service-center tooling is required for the calibration step. For Polestar, Hyundai, and Kia EV platforms we calibrate in-house with OEM-compatible static and dynamic tooling. There is no manufacturer in this list that allows the camera cluster to remain on its post-install datum and still function safely.
Every EV we service mounts the windshield-bracket camera cluster at the same point — top-center of the windshield, just below the rearview mirror. Tesla uses a three-camera cluster (main forward, wide-angle forward, narrow forward) plus two B-pillar repeater cameras, two fender cameras, and one rear camera — eight cameras total on 2021+ Model 3 / Y / S / X and Cybertruck, vision-only since April 2021. Lucid Air uses a vision-first DreamDrive cluster with optional lidar on higher trims. Rivian R1T / R1S use the Driver+ cluster — eleven cameras total, panoramic single-piece windshield, vision-only. Polestar 2 uses a single forward-facing camera plus a grille-mounted radar for Volvo / Polestar Pilot Assist (the OEM-only-sourced windshield bracket flatness tolerance is what makes aftermarket glass fail the calibration window). Hyundai Ioniq 5 / 6 and Kia EV6 / EV9 use the standard SmartSense forward-camera plus grille-radar stack on Highway Driving Assist trims.
Any windshield removal and replacement breaks the factory camera-cluster geometry. For Tesla, the entire cluster datum shifts because the bracket transfers with the glass — any urethane bead inconsistency creates a micro-tilt that propagates to the camera-array angle, and Tesla Vision does not always illuminate a dashboard warning for partial miscalibrations. For Rivian, the eleven-camera Driver+ array datum breaks in the same way. For Lucid, the DreamDrive cluster datum breaks plus optional lidar loses its mounting reference when the windshield area is disturbed. For Polestar 2, the Pilot Assist single-camera datum shifts plus the grille-mounted radar loses its mounting reference. For Hyundai Ioniq 5 / 6 and Kia EV6 / EV9, the SmartSense forward camera plus grille-radar datum both shift. Suspension work, any front-end collision repair, wheel-alignment change, or high-voltage component work further invalidates the datum. EV windshields do not get re-glassed often — typically once per decade per vehicle — and the cost of a missed calibration propagates across every ADAS decision for the next ten years.
Tesla Vision is vision-only on 2021+ vehicles — and does not always illuminate a dashboard warning when the windshield three-camera cluster datum is disturbed, particularly for partial miscalibrations where one of the three cameras is off-axis. Autopilot lane-keeping will track the wrong lane center. FSD lane-change decisions will be made on broken geometry. Smart Summon will misjudge obstacles using the B-pillar and rear cameras that share the windshield-cluster datum. Rivian Driver+ will exhibit the same silent failure mode — Driver+ lane centering, Adaptive Cruise Control, and lane-change decisions will operate on broken geometry with no dashboard warning. Lucid DreamDrive will produce similarly silent failures on the vision cluster, and the optional lidar handshake will fail or engage in stretches where it should not. Polestar Pilot Assist will fail to track lane centering on I-95 around curves, and the Forward Collision Warning may not engage at the OEM threshold. Hyundai Highway Driving Assist 2 and Kia Highway Driving Assist will appear active on the dashboard but Adaptive Cruise Control misjudges following distance at highway speed. No fault code is set when this happens — the system appears active. VA inspection failures, insurance claim denials, and OEM service-center warranty friction all trace to skipped recalibration on EV windshields.
When we remove an EV windshield, the camera-cluster bracket comes with it (or breaks its factory bond to the glass). Either way, the precise factory geometry the OEM established at the assembly plant is now broken. The cameras are aligned to a fraction-of-a-degree tolerance — a 0.5° error at the cluster translates to a lane-line position error of several feet at 100 yards ahead, and a depth error of comparable magnitude at the distances Autopilot / Driver+ / DreamDrive / Pilot Assist / Highway Driving Assist use for following-distance and forward-collision decisions. Static (and on Polestar, Hyundai, and Kia EV platforms, dynamic) calibration re-teaches the cluster and the radar where straight-ahead is so the entire ADAS stack reacts on the road the car actually sees — not a road that is several feet offset from reality. The Tesla / Rivian / Lucid OEM service-center half is what we coordinate with the OEM Service Center the same day as the install. The Polestar / Hyundai / Kia EV half is what we perform in-house with OEM-compatible static and dynamic tooling.
A Tesla Service Center, Rivian Service Center, or Lucid Studio places the car in a controlled bay at a fixed distance from a printed OEM calibration target, runs the OEM-specific scan tool through the cluster re-learn for the windshield three-camera (Tesla) or eleven-camera (Rivian) or DreamDrive (Lucid) cluster, and verifies Sentry Mode / Smart Summon / Auto Lane Change data flow. The target board geometry, the on-board diagnostic pass criteria, and the post-calibration handshake are all OEM-specific tooling. Tesla, Rivian, and Lucid do not sell parts or calibration equipment to independent shops — Rivian in particular never has — so the calibration half must be coordinated at the OEM Service Center.
Polestar 2, Hyundai Ioniq 5 / 6, and Kia EV6 / EV9 are calibrated entirely in-house at our Colonial Heights shop — OEM-compatible scan tool, OEM-spec target board geometry, the OEM published static-plus-dynamic procedure for your model year, documented pre- and post-calibration report. Polestar glass is OEM-only-sourced from Polestar-supplied stock; aftermarket substitutes fail the bracket flatness tolerance and create stored fault codes. Hyundai and Kia EV platforms use the SmartSense static-plus-dynamic procedure shared with the gas sedan / SUV line — no separate path. The dealer-vs-third-party question is moot when tooling and procedure match — what matters is OEM-compatible scan tooling and the OEM published target geometry, which AGSC-certified independents provide.
Every windshield-mounted ADAS camera is recalibrated one of two ways. Static target calibration re-teaches the cluster with the vehicle stationary in front of a printed target board on level ground. Dynamic calibration re-teaches the cluster on a prescribed road-driven route. Across the EV line we service: Tesla, Lucid, and Rivian require OEM-specific service-center tooling for the calibration step — the static step runs at the OEM Service Center on the same day as the install (we coordinate the handoff). Polestar 2 requires static plus dynamic, performed in-house with OEM-compatible tooling. Hyundai Ioniq 5 / 6 and Kia EV6 / EV9 require static plus dynamic, performed in-house with the SmartSense OEM-compatible tooling shared with the gas sedan / SUV line. No matter the platform, the calibration half is what decides whether Autopilot / Driver+ / DreamDrive / Pilot Assist / Highway Driving Assist works at all.
Vehicle stays on a level lift, on level ground, in a controlled bay. A printed target board sits at a precise measured distance and height in front of the car. The scan tool drives the camera cluster through its re-learn — for Tesla the three-camera cluster plus the B-pillar repeater cameras and the rear camera share the windshield-cluster datum and require cluster-level static re-learn at OEM Service Center; for Polestar / Hyundai / Kia EV we run static in-house with OEM-compatible tooling. No driving required for the static leg.
A scan tool drives a prescribed road-driving routine at a prescribed speed on well-marked roads while the camera module re-learns where the lane lines and lead vehicles actually are. Required on top of static for Polestar 2, Hyundai Ioniq 5 / 6, and Kia EV6 / EV9 — we run dynamic in-house. Not part of the Tesla, Rivian, or Lucid OEM published procedure — those platforms require static at the OEM Service Center, and the OEM scan tool handles B-pillar / fender / rear camera handover after the cluster re-learn.

OEM service-center tooling is required for Rivian Driver+ — Rivian does not sell parts and calibration tooling to independent shops. The windshield install is performed at our shop; the Driver+ calibration is coordinated with the Rivian Service Center for the same documentation chain as Tesla. Driver+ lane centering, Adaptive Cruise Control, and lane-change decisions will not operate correctly until the eleven-camera cluster datum is restored.
Lucid Air uses a vision-first DreamDrive cluster with optional lidar on DreamDrive Pro higher trims. The vision cluster is windshield-mounted; the lidar is roof-mounted and shares the windshield-cluster datum for the geo-restriction handshake. Polestar 2 uses a single forward-facing windshield camera plus a grille-mounted radar (often hidden behind the Polestar 2 emblem / Volvo Ironmark) on most trims for Volvo / Polestar Pilot Assist.
Lucid Air vision cluster datum handles like a Tesla — windshield install at our shop, OEM-licensed Lucid Studio calibration on the same day, lidar handshake included where equipped. Polestar 2 OEM-only-sourced glass is required — aftermarket substitutes fail flatness tolerance and create stored fault codes the Polestar service tool flags as install-error. Static plus dynamic recalibration required on most Polestar 2 trims; radar re-aim required when radar is equipped. We calibrate Polestar 2 in-house with OEM-compatible static and dynamic tooling.
Single forward-facing windshield camera plus grille-mounted radar (often hidden behind the Hyundai H emblem on Ioniq 5 / 6, or behind the Kia K emblem on EV6 / EV9) on most Highway Driving Assist trims. HDA2 on most Ioniq 5 / 6 builds; Highway Driving Assist on most EV6 and EV9 builds. Acoustic laminate and IR-reflective coating on most trims.

Before we touch the glass on a Tesla (Model 3 / Y / S / X / Cybertruck), Lucid Air, or Rivian (R1T / R1S), we put the vehicle into service mode via the OEM touchscreen or scan-tool command and verify the high-voltage system is isolated per the OEM Service Information procedure. We scan for stored ADAS fault codes and confirm the exact recalibration procedure Tesla / Rivian / Lucid specifies for your model year — including which generation of Autopilot (HW3 vs HW4) or Driver+ or DreamDrive is on the build. For Polestar 2, Hyundai Ioniq 5 / 6, and Kia EV6 / EV9 we confirm the static-plus-dynamic procedure and OEM-compatible tooling path.
We install OEM-spec or OEM-approved vendor-code glass with the correct panoramic single-piece bracket geometry. Tesla approved vendor codes (FW833, FW867, FW018, and similar) carry the right bracket flatness for the three-camera cluster — aftermarket substitutes fall fractionally outside the OEM calibration window. Polestar 2 OEM-only-sourced glass from Polestar-supplied stock fails flatness tolerance on every aftermarket, period. Lucid Air OEM-spec glass is sourced from Lucid-supplied stock. Hyundai Ioniq 5 / 6 and Kia EV6 / EV9 OEM-spec glass comes from a tighter supply chain than typical sedans. Aftermarket glass without the proper bracket flatness, the correct frit pattern, or the correct camera-cluster boss geometry creates stereo alignment errors that no amount of post-install calibration can fully correct — bracket transfer confirmation is part of every install.
For Tesla (Model 3 / Y / S / X / Cybertruck), Lucid Air, and Rivian (R1T / R1S), OEM-specific service-center tooling is required for the calibration half — Tesla-specific tooling for the windshield three-camera cluster plus B-pillar and rear camera handover; Rivian-specific tooling for the eleven-camera Driver+ cluster; Lucid-specific tooling for the DreamDrive vision cluster plus lidar handshake on DreamDrive Pro. We do not have that tooling — Rivian in particular never sells to independent shops. So the workflow is windshield install at our Colonial Heights shop, OEM service-center calibration the same day or next morning. For Polestar 2, Hyundai Ioniq 5 / 6, and Kia EV6 / EV9 we calibrate in-house with OEM-compatible static and dynamic tooling on a single appointment — same-day handoff.
You leave with documented pre- and post-install scan results from our shop — verifying the camera-cluster bracket is intact, the urethane bead pattern is within OEM specification, the pinch-weld prep is clean, and the bracket transfer is correctly reseated. For Tesla / Rivian / Lucid, the OEM Service Center invoice for the calibration half completes the documentation chain (Autopilot / FSD / Driver+ / DreamDrive within OEM tolerance). For Polestar / Hyundai / Kia EV platforms we calibrate in-house, the same-day handoff applies, and the single invoice is the full documentation chain. Either way, you have evidence every ADAS system on the vehicle is operating on restored geometry — not on the broken post-install datum.
