Lexus Safety System+ pairs a forward-looking camera with other vehicle-specific sensors. The primary camera is mounted high on the windshield near the rearview mirror; many Lexus configurations also use a millimeter-wave radar behind the grille, behind the Lexus emblem, or in a lower front-bumper pod. The forward camera sits in the windshield-mounted module at the top-center of the glass, just below or beside the rearview mirror. RX, NX, ES and GX generations use different brackets, glass features and software. We confirm the VIN, trim and LSS+ tier before selecting glass or a target procedure.

Where radar may live

Grille, emblem or bumper radar

The millimeter-wave radar is not in the same place on every Lexus. Depending on year and trim, it may sit behind the grille, behind the Lexus front emblem, or in a lower bumper pod. Radar-equipped trims can require a separate re-aim after grille, emblem, bumper or collision work.

What triggers recalibration

Glass, bracket, bumper or geometry change

Windshield removal or replacement, camera-bracket disturbance, incorrect glass curvature or frit, front-end collision repair, alignment or suspension work, and disturbance near the grille, emblem or bumper can move a sensor outside tolerance. A quiet dashboard does not prove the camera or radar is aimed correctly.

Incorrect braking, lane and following inputs

If geometry is wrong, Pre-Collision System, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist, Lane Tracing Assist, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Road Sign Assist, Automatic High Beams and other equipped functions can read the road or lead vehicle incorrectly. Some partial misalignments do not create an immediate warning light.

Why Lexus windshield replacement can change the safety-system geometry

The forward camera is aligned to the vehicle body and to the original windshield’s bracket position, curvature, frit pattern and optical path. Removing that glass changes the relationship even when a replacement looks identical from the driver seat. Correct glass selection, safe-drive-away cure and the prescribed camera and radar procedure restore the reference geometry before your Lexus returns to Richmond traffic.

Static, dynamic and radar procedure

Static, dynamic and radar calibration are not interchangeable

Some Lexus Safety System+ configurations use a stationary fixed-target camera calibration. Others add a road-driven dynamic step, and radar-equipped trims can require a separate front-radar re-aim. We do not assign one procedure to every Lexus badge: the VIN, model year, LSS+ generation and trim determine the final sequence.

Static camera calibration

The Lexus is positioned on a level surface while a technician places the manufacturer-specified target at the required height, distance and angle. Diagnostic tooling sets the windshield camera baseline to the vehicle’s factory datum.

Dynamic camera calibration

When Lexus service information calls for a dynamic step, the technician completes the prescribed road drive on well-marked roads so the camera can confirm lane and vehicle recognition. A dynamic drive does not replace the static setup when both are required.

Grille or emblem radar re-aim

A millimeter-wave radar behind the Lexus grille, emblem or lower bumper has its own aim and datum. Grille, emblem, bumper or collision work can require this separate procedure even when the windshield camera calibration passes.

Pre-scan the Lexus
