Mazda i-ACTIVSENSE is a family of driver-assistance systems built around forward-looking sensors. On equipped Mazda trims, the forward camera sits in the windshield-mounted module near the rearview mirror and reads lane markings, vehicles, pedestrians, and signs. Some years and trims add front radar or surround-view sensors. The camera bracket, frit, glass curvature, and optical clarity all establish the geometry the software expects.
The primary forward camera is mounted at the top-center of the windshield, behind the rearview mirror area. Depending on year and trim, Mazda may also use front radar and additional 360-degree camera hardware. We verify the exact i-ACTIVSENSE equipment from the VIN and trim before selecting glass or a calibration procedure.
Windshield removal or replacement, camera-bracket disturbance, incorrect glass curvature or frit, front-end collision repair, suspension or alignment work, and bumper or radar work can move a sensor outside its Mazda tolerance. A quiet dashboard does not prove the camera is aimed correctly.
With incorrect geometry, Forward Smart Brake Support may react at the wrong distance, Lane Departure Warning or Lane Keep Assist may read the lane edge incorrectly, and Mazda Radar Cruise Control may follow the wrong target or brake unexpectedly. Traffic Sign Recognition and High Beam Control can also be affected.
The i-ACTIVSENSE camera is aligned to the vehicle body and to the original windshield’s bracket position, curvature, frit pattern, and optical path. Removing the old glass changes that relationship even when the replacement looks identical from the driver seat. Correct glass selection and a post-install calibration restore the camera’s reference geometry before the vehicle returns to Richmond traffic.
A Mazda dealer verifies the vehicle configuration, installs the specified glass, connects Mazda-compatible diagnostic tooling, and follows the static or dynamic service procedure published for that model year and trim. Radar or surround-view steps are added when the equipment list requires them.
We use the same decision points: VIN and trim verification, OEM-spec or OEM-available glass, a controlled target setup when static calibration is required, the prescribed road drive when dynamic calibration is required, and a documented pre-scan and post-scan. The work stays at our Colonial Heights calibration bay rather than being handed off.
Mazda’s procedure is model-year and equipment specific. The existing Mazda calibration matrix covers Mazda3 (2014–2025), CX-5 (2013–2025), CX-9 (2016–2025), CX-30 (2020–2025), and CX-50 (2023–2025) as static fixed-target procedures. We still verify the VIN and trim against current Mazda service information before the windshield is installed; a dynamic step or separate radar/360° procedure is never assumed or omitted by shortcut.
The Mazda is stationary on a level surface while a technician positions the manufacturer-specified target at the required height, distance, and angle. Diagnostic tooling sets the windshield camera baseline to the vehicle’s factory datum.
Dynamic calibration is a road-driven procedure used by some other manufacturer lanes, while the covered Mazda rows in our current matrix are static fixed-target. If current Mazda service information for a VIN calls for a road procedure or an additional radar/360° step, we identify and document it separately rather than borrowing another make’s workflow.
The sensor layout and calibration method are not interchangeable between manufacturers. That is why we identify the Mazda procedure from the VIN instead of borrowing a Honda, Ford, or Subaru shortcut.

We scan for stored i-ACTIVSENSE, camera, radar, and communication faults before touching the glass. Existing faults or collision damage are documented so calibration results are not confused with a pre-existing problem.
We confirm the VIN, model year, package, HUD, rain sensor, acoustic laminate, camera bracket, and radar or 360° equipment. That determines the OEM-spec or OEM-available part and the Mazda-published calibration path.
The windshield is installed with the correct camera mounting geometry, frit, sensor provisions, and safe-drive-away adhesive cure. Glass that is merely the right shape is not automatically the right i-ACTIVSENSE part.
We perform the required static target session for the covered Mazda matrix rows and add any VIN-specific radar, surround-view, or current service-information step as its own documented procedure.
A final scan confirms the system status and any cleared calibration faults. You receive the result and the verified parts/procedure record for your Mazda service history.
