Tesla Autopilot and Full Self-Driving (FSD) are driver-assistance suites built around a cluster of cameras housed in the windshield bracket above the rearview mirror — three forward-facing cameras (main, wide-angle, narrow) — plus cameras in the B-pillars, fenders, and rear that all share a single geometric calibration datum. That datum is calibrated to within a fraction of a degree at the factory. Windshield replacement disturbs the windshield-mounted cluster and breaks that datum for the entire camera array. Every Tesla-specific tooling run has to re-establish geometry for the windshield cluster, the B-pillar cameras, and (on radar-equipped Model S and Model X built before April 2021) the front radar.
Tesla uses three forward cameras in the windshield bracket (main, wide-angle, narrow) plus two B-pillar repeater cameras, two fender cameras on the front fenders, and a rear camera. Model S and Model X built before April 2021 also include a front bumper-mounted radar. Model 3, Model Y, Model S (post-2021), Model X (post-2021), and Cybertruck rely on vision-only — no front radar — so the radar calibration step does not apply. Rivian R1T and R1S use a similar multi-camera cluster on the windshield with a Driver+ ADAS stack. Ford F-150 Lightning and Mustang Mach-E use a single forward camera plus the BlueCruise hardware stack. Hyundai Ioniq 5/6 and Kia EV6/EV9 share the SmartSense stack on the gas Hyundai/Kia line covered on the Kia/Hyundai deep page.
Any windshield removal and replacement disturbs the windshield-mounted three-camera cluster on every Tesla — Model S, Model 3, Model X, Model Y, and Cybertruck. On Model S and Model X built before April 2021 the front bumper radar also has to be re-aimed if anything disturbs its mount. On Model 3, Model Y, and Cybertruck (vision-only Tesla), Tesla-specific tooling is still required to re-establish the datum for every camera in the array — Tesla Autopilot and FSD will not operate correctly until that datum is restored.
Tesla does not always illuminate a dashboard warning when the camera datum is disturbed — particularly for partial miscalibrations where one of the three windshield cameras is off-axis. Autopilot lane-keeping will track the wrong lane center. FSD lane-change decisions will be made on broken geometry. Smart Summon parking logic depends on the rear and B-pillar cameras and will misjudge obstacles. Most drivers will not feel anything is wrong until one of these systems makes a decision on bad data. Tesla requires that calibration be performed with Tesla-specific tooling — most independent shops do not have it, and Tesla Service Center is the usual handoff.
When we remove your Tesla windshield, the three-camera cluster in the windshield bracket comes with it (or is detached from the glass and must be reattached to the new windshield). Either way, the precise factory datum Tesla established at the assembly plant is now broken. The three windshield cameras are aligned to a fraction of a degree tolerance — plus the B-pillar and fender cameras share that same geometric reference. Tesla-specific tooling re-teaches the entire camera array where straight-ahead is so Autopilot, FSD, and Smart Summon react on the road the car actually sees, not a road that is several feet offset from reality. The Tesla Service Center is the default handoff today — most independent shops do not have the tooling. We do not subcontract this work. If your local Tesla Service Center sends you back to us for windshield install only, we coordinate on the calibration separately and document the result.

For Tesla and Rivian the windshield install happens at our shop, the calibration step coordinates with the OEM service center, and you leave with documented pre- and post-scan on both ends. For Ford F-150 Lightning, Mustang Mach-E, Hyundai Ioniq 5/6, and Kia EV6/EV9 we calibrate in-house with OEM-compatible tooling.
Before we touch the glass, we scan your Tesla or EV for stored ADAS fault codes and confirm the exact recalibration procedure Tesla (or Rivian, Ford, or Hyundai/Kia for the non-Tesla EVs) specifies for your model year — including whether your vehicle is the vision-only generation or the pre-April 2021 Model S/X with front radar. We confirm whether your Tesla-specific tooling handoff goes to Tesla Service Center, or — for non-Tesla EVs — we can perform the calibration in-house with OEM-compatible tooling.
We install OEM-spec or Tesla-approved windshield glass with the correct mounting bracket geometry. Aftermarket glass without the proper three-camera cluster mounting flatness creates alignment errors that no amount of post-install calibration can fully correct. For Tesla models where the camera housing is bonded to the windshield at the factory, we confirm the cluster transfer bracket is intact and correctly reseated.
For Tesla (Model S/3/X/Y and Cybertruck) and Rivian (R1T/R1S), Tesla-specific Tesla Service Center tooling or Rivian Service tooling is required for the windshield cluster plus B-pillar cameras. We coordinate the handoff with the Tesla Service Center or Rivian Service Center — windshield install at our shop, calibration at the OEM service center, documented pre- and post-calibration scan on both ends. For Ford F-150 Lightning, Mustang Mach-E, and Ioniq 5/6 / EV6/EV9, the calibration can be performed in-house with OEM-compatible static and dynamic tooling.
You leave with a documented pre- and post-calibration report — showing the ADAS modules passed Tesla (or Rivian, Ford, or Hyundai/Kia) tolerance, which cameras were calibrated (windshield three-camera cluster, B-pillar, fender, rear, and the front radar where equipped), and the system status at handoff. This is your evidence that Autopilot, FSD, Driver+, BlueCruise, or Highway Driving Assist is operating within OEM tolerance.
