What Subaru EyeSight actually is — and why every windshield swap breaks it

Subaru EyeSight is a driver-assistance suite built around a pair of stereo cameras — two forward-facing cameras housed in a single pod mounted near the top center of the windshield, just below the rearview mirror. The cameras see slightly different angles of the road ahead; by comparing the two images in real time, EyeSight calculates depth, lane geometry, vehicle position, and distance to obstacles. That geometry is calibrated to within a fraction of a degree at the factory.

Mounted to the windshield in a bracket roughly centered above the rearview mirror — the same physical location regardless of model (Forester, Outback, Crosstrek, Legacy, Ascent, WRX). On 2023+ Outback, Ascent, and Legacy, an additional 360° surround-view camera cluster is built into the windshield mounting area as well.

What Triggers Recalibration

Any Geometry Change

Any event that changes the geometric relationship between the camera pod and the road — windshield removal and replacement, windshield bracket adjustment, suspension work, front-end collision repair, or wheel alignment changes — invalidates the factory calibration. The cameras are now pointing in slightly the wrong direction. They will still report data to the EyeSight control module, but the data is wrong.

What Breaks If You Skip It

Silent Misalignment

Subaru does not always illuminate a dashboard warning when calibration is incorrect — particularly for partial miscalibrations where one camera is off-axis. Pre-Collision Braking, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Keep Assist, Lane Departure Prevention, and the EyeSight 4.0 Automatic Emergency Steering assist can all operate on the bad geometry. Most drivers will not feel anything is wrong until the system fails to react in an actual emergency.

Why a windshield replacement triggers calibration — every time

When we remove your Subaru windshield, the EyeSight camera pod comes with it (or is detached from the glass and must be reattached to the new windshield). Either way, the precise factory geometry that Subaru established at the assembly plant is now broken. The cameras are aligned to a fraction of a degree tolerance. A 0.5° error at the camera translates to a lane-line position error of several feet at 100 yards ahead. Calibration re-teaches the cameras where straight-ahead is so Pre-Collision Braking, Adaptive Cruise, and Lane Keep react on the road the car actually sees — not a road that is several feet offset from reality.

Camera Setup

Single-lens forward-facing camera mounted to the windshield (same general location as EyeSight). A separate millimeter-wave radar sensor is mounted behind the grille, not on the glass. On some models, a second radar sensor is mounted in the bumper corner.

Requires both camera AND radar calibration after windshield replacement. TSS 3.0 added driver monitoring camera calibration on some models; Lexus Safety System+ requires both static and dynamic procedures on certain vehicles.

Single-lens forward-facing camera on the windshield, plus bumper-mounted radar (often hidden behind the front emblem or a sensor pod in the lower bumper). Some Acura models add a second bumper radar and side radar for blind-spot info.

Calibration

Camera-only or camera-plus-radar calibration depending on year/model. AcuraWatch on newer Acuras stacks additional procedures — for example, multiple surround-view cameras if the car is equipped with the 360° system.

Camera Setup

A cluster of cameras — three cameras housed in the windshield bracket above the rearview mirror (main forward, wide-angle forward, narrow forward), plus B-pillar cameras, fender cameras, and a rear camera. Every camera has its own calibration target.

Calibration

Tesla requires both camera and radar (where equipped) calibration, and Tesla-specific tooling for the B-pillar / fender cameras. Most independent shops do not have Tesla tooling and the calibration must be performed at a Tesla Service Center.

Pre-scan + VIN-spec confirm

Before we touch the glass, we scan your Subaru for stored EyeSight fault codes and confirm the exact recalibration procedure Subaru specifies for your model year (EyeSight generation and target-board distance vary by year).

OEM-spec windshield + bracket install

We install OEM-spec glass with the correct mounting bracket geometry. Aftermarket windshields without the proper bracket flatness create camera alignment errors that no amount of post-install calibration can fully correct.

Common Questions About Subaru EyeSight Calibration

EyeSight static target calibration is priced as a required line item on your invoice, not bundled or hidden. For most Subaru models (Forester, Outback, Crosstrek, Legacy, Ascent), EyeSight static calibration starts at $300 when combined with windshield replacement. Exact pricing depends on your model year and any additional cameras (for example, the 2023+ 360° surround-view system on Outback / Ascent / Legacy adds procedure time). We confirm the exact line-item price before any work begins.
EyeSight operates on incorrect camera geometry. Pre-Collision Braking will not react at the correct distance. Adaptive Cruise Control will pace the wrong vehicle. Lane Keep Assist will drift inside or outside the lane line. Automatic Emergency Steering (EyeSight 4.0) will steer based on the wrong lane position. Subaru EyeSight uses static (target board) calibration — not dynamic. The vehicle is placed at a precise distance from a printed target on level ground, the camera geometry is reset, and the EyeSight control module reads the target to re-establish where straight-ahead is. Tire pressure, fuel level, and vehicle ride height must be within Subaru specification at the time of calibration. Dynamic (road-driven) calibration is not part of the Subaru procedure and will not satisfy the post-windshield-replacement requirement.
No. Subaru does not require EyeSight calibration to be performed at a Subaru dealer. What Subaru requires is that calibration be performed by a shop using OEM-compatible tooling, following Subaru published procedure, with documented pre- and post-calibration diagnostics. An AGSC-certified independent shop like Legendary Auto Glass meets that requirement. Calibration results are recorded in the Subaru EyeSight control module and visible to any Subaru dealer scan tool afterward. We provide a written report you can take to any Subaru dealer as proof calibration was performed.
When combined with windshield replacement at our shop, the calibration adds about 45 to 90 minutes depending on model year and whether any additional cameras (such as the 360° surround-view system on 2023+ Outback / Ascent / Legacy) need to be calibrated. Standalone calibration on an existing windshield (for example, after a front-end collision repair) takes about the same time. We do not release the vehicle until the post-calibration diagnostic report confirms EyeSight is within Subaru tolerance.
Yes. Subaru scan tools read the EyeSight module state, including calibration status, last calibration date, and any stored faults. When we complete the static target calibration and the diagnostic passes, that status is recorded in the module. A dealer service writer pulling codes will see that calibration has been performed and the system is within spec.
