The camera reads lane geometry, traffic signs, vehicles ahead, and pedestrians, and pairs with a millimeter-wave radar module hidden behind the Hyundai "H" or Kia "K" emblem in the grille on most HDA-equipped trims from 2022 onward. Both brands publish the geometry problem in similar terms: the camera and the radar are paired inputs that both feed Highway Driving Assist, Smart Cruise Control, Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist, and Lane Following Assist, and those inputs are calibrated to within a fraction of a degree at the factory. What Triggers Recalibration

Any Geometry Change

Any windshield removal and replacement, windshield bracket adjustment, suspension work, front-end collision repair, wheel-alignment change, or anything that moves the grille-mounted millimeter-wave radar invalidates the factory calibration. Hyundai and Kia do not separately mark which leg was tripped; both OEMs publish the procedure as "recalibrate the camera whenever the windshield is disturbed, and re-aim the grille-mounted radar whenever the bumper or grille has been disturbed." The model-year matrix determines which static / dynamic / radar-aim steps apply — most 2022+ HDA trims and the EV lineup (Ioniq 5, Ioniq 6, EV6, EV9) require the static + dynamic + radar re-aim stack; earlier SmartSense + Drive Wise trims (2019-2021) without HDA use static only.

What Breaks If You Skip It

Silent Camera + Radar Misalignment

Hyundai and Kia do not always illuminate a dashboard warning when calibration is incorrect — particularly for partial miscalibrations where the camera is only slightly off-axis. Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist will brake at the wrong distance or for the wrong target. Smart Cruise Control will pace the wrong lead vehicle, including cars in adjacent lanes during a lane change. Highway Driving Assist will steer toward an off-center lane position. Navigation-based Smart Cruise Control (NSCC) can apply phantom braking at interchanges and curves because the speed-set logic is using a miscalibrated forward-camera horizon. Lane Following Assist will track the wrong lane center. Driver Attention Warning can become erratic and either lock out the system or fail to alert a drowsy driver. Safe Exit Warning and Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist can produce false alerts or fail to alert. Most drivers will not feel anything is wrong until the system fails to react in a real emergency.

Most 2022 and newer Hyundai HDA-equipped trims (Palisade, Sonata, Tucson, Santa Fe, Elantra 2022+, Kona 2022+, Ioniq 5, Ioniq 6) and most 2022 and newer Kia HDA-equipped trims (Telluride, Sorento, Sportage 2022+, K5 2022+, EV6, EV9) require both static and dynamic procedures, and the grille-mounted millimeter-wave radar behind the Hyundai "H" or Kia "K" emblem is re-aimed as a separate required step.
Yes — on Palisade top trims, Telluride, and any HDA-equipped Hyundai or Kia trim, a suspension or ride-height change (including leveling kit install, air suspension service, coil-spring replacement, lift kit install, or lowering kit) breaks Highway Driving Assist forward-camera geometry the same way windshield replacement does. The forward-camera at the top of the windshield reads lane geometry against the road horizon, and that horizon shifts when ride height changes — even a 0.5° change in resting rake moves the camera horizon by enough to put Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist, Highway Driving Assist, Lane Following Assist, and Navigation-based Smart Cruise Control out of spec. On trims equipped with the grille-mounted millimeter-wave radar behind the Hyundai "H" or Kia "K" emblem, the radar-aim datum also shifts with ride height — so the radar re-aim is a separate required step after any suspension or ride-height change, the same way it is after windshield replacement on the same trims. Standalone calibration on an existing windshield (for example, after a front-end collision repair, a bumper replacement, or a suspension or ride-height change) takes about the same time. We do not release the vehicle until the post-calibration diagnostic report confirms the camera and the radar (where equipped) are within Hyundai or Kia tolerance.
Yes. Hyundai and Kia scan tools read the SmartSense / HDA or Drive Wise / HDA module state, including calibration status, last calibration date, and any stored faults. When we complete the static and dynamic calibration and the diagnostic passes, that status is recorded in the module. A dealer service writer pulling codes will see that calibration has been performed and the system is within spec.
