Chevy Safety Assist is GM's standard driver-assistance suite, built around a single-lens forward-facing camera mounted in a bracket at the top center of the windshield, just below the rearview mirror. The camera reads lane geometry, traffic signs, vehicles ahead, and pedestrians. A separate long-range millimeter-wave radar sensor is mounted at the front of the vehicle — most commonly behind the Chevy bowtie emblem, or on some trims located in a lower-bumper sensor pod. On most 2022+ trims, additional short-range corner radars sit in the rear corners. The camera, the long-range radar, and the corner radars are paired inputs — all feed Automatic Emergency Braking, Forward Collision Alert, Front Pedestrian Braking, Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning, Adaptive Cruise Control, and (where equipped) Rear Cross Traffic Alert and HD Surround Vision. Super Cruise-equipped vehicles — Cadillac CT5/CT6 and Chevy Bolt EUV today — add hands-free highway driving that relies on a high-definition map plus lidar-mapped geo-restriction layer, and requires a separate DLC-learned GRBL (geo-referenced) handshake. That entire geometry stack is calibrated to within a fraction of a degree at the factory. When we remove your windshield, the camera calibration is broken. The radar calibration can also be disturbed by any front-end work that touches the grille or bumper area.

Any windshield removal and replacement, windshield bracket adjustment, suspension work, front-end collision repair, wheel-alignment change, or anything that disturbs the front emblem or bumper fascia invalidates the factory camera and radar calibration. GM does not separately mark which leg was tripped; the GM published procedure is to recalibrate both whenever the camera is disturbed, and to re-aim the long-range radar whenever the front radar has been disturbed. Short-range corner-radar aim is a separate required step on every 2022+ trim where corner radar is equipped. Super Cruise trims additionally require the extended dynamic calibration step and a DLC-learned GRBL handshake to confirm HD-map geo-restriction is active.
GM does not always illuminate a dashboard warning when calibration is incorrect — particularly for partial miscalibrations where the camera or radar is only slightly off-axis. Automatic Emergency Braking will brake at the wrong distance — usually too late, sometimes for the wrong target. Forward Collision Alert will trigger at the wrong range. Front Pedestrian Braking will react to phantom or missed targets. Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning will steer toward an off-center lane position or fail to engage. Adaptive Cruise Control will pace the wrong lead vehicle, including cars in adjacent lanes during a lane change. Rear Cross Traffic Alert can report false negatives on real vehicles. On Super Cruise trims, geometry is even more critical — the forward camera reads lane geometry AND the system runs a GRBL handshake against the HD-map database to confirm geo-restriction coverage. A miscalibrated camera will silently produce a wrong GRBL handshake and Super Cruise hands-free driving may disengage unexpectedly, fail to engage at all, or engage in stretches where it should not. Most drivers will not feel anything is wrong until the system fails to react in an actual emergency.
When we remove your GM windshield, the Chevy Safety Assist camera pod comes with it (or is detached from the glass and must be reattached to the new windshield). Either way, the precise factory geometry GM established at the assembly plant is now broken. The camera is aligned to a fraction-of-a-degree tolerance — a 0.5° error at the camera translates to a lane-line position error of several feet at 100 yards ahead. Static and dynamic calibration re-teach the camera, the long-range radar, and (where equipped) the short-range corner radars where straight-ahead is so AEB, FCA, Front Pedestrian Braking, Lane Keep Assist, and Adaptive Cruise Control react on the road the car actually sees — not a road that is several feet offset from reality. On Super Cruise trims the geometry is even more critical: the forward camera reads lane geometry AND the system runs a GRBL handshake against an HD-map database to confirm geo-restriction coverage. A miscalibrated camera will silently produce a wrong GRBL handshake and Super Cruise hands-free driving may disengage unexpectedly or fail to engage. The long-range radar re-aim is a separate required step; skipping it leaves AEB and Adaptive Cruise Control operating with a mis-aimed radar even after the camera leg is corrected.
Every major ADAS suite uses a windshield-mounted camera — but the geometry, the additional sensors, and the calibration procedure all differ. Specialized tooling and per-OEM procedures matter. Generic "ADAS calibration" without model-specific protocol is how calibration gets skipped or done wrong.

Before we touch the glass, we connect to GM via the GM Global Diagnostic System (GDS2) and the MVI (Multiple Vehicle Interface) tool to scan for stored Chevy Safety Assist and Super Cruise fault codes — and confirm the exact recalibration procedure GM publishes for your model year. We confirm whether your vehicle is on Chevy Safety Assist baseline, whether your trim is Super Cruise-equipped (requires the extended dynamic step plus DLC GRBL handshake), and whether your trim carries short-range corner radars that require the additional aim step. For Super Cruise trims we also verify the HD-map database is current and the DLC handshake is available.
We install OEM-spec glass with the correct mounting bracket geometry. Aftermarket windshields without the proper bracket flatness, the correct frit pattern, or the correct camera-mounting boss geometry will introduce alignment errors that no amount of post-install calibration can fully correct — the camera may calibrate within tolerance on the bench but drift under thermal load or road vibration. On radar-equipped trims we also confirm the front-mounted long-range millimeter-wave radar (behind the front emblem or in the bumper pod) is undisturbed and ready for re-aim. Super Cruise trims additionally require the latest GM SPS/GMDI programming state to be confirmed before the GRBL handshake will complete.
GM procedures differ by equipment tier. Chevy Safety Assist baseline trims use static target calibration only and confirm forward-camera geometry. Super Cruise trims additionally require the extended dynamic step that confirms hands-free highway driving readiness and a DLC-learned GRBL handshake to re-enable the HD-map geo-restriction layer. 2022+ trims with short-range corner radars require an additional corner-radar aim. We perform the procedure GM publishes for your specific model and trim — using OEM-compatible static target boards, the GM dynamic road-driven step where applicable, OEM-compatible radar re-aim tooling, and (for Super Cruise) the GDS2 sequence that completes the GRBL handshake.
You leave with a documented pre- and post-calibration report — showing the Chevy Safety Assist and (where equipped) Super Cruise modules passed GM tolerance, which sub-systems were calibrated (camera only on baseline trims; camera plus dynamic plus long-range radar re-aim plus GRBL handshake on Super Cruise trims; plus corner-radar aim on 2022+ corner-radar trims), and the system status at handoff. This is your evidence that AEB, FCA, Front Pedestrian Braking, Lane Keep Assist, Adaptive Cruise Control, and (on Super Cruise trims) hands-free highway driving are operating at GM spec.
